Yesterday’sFinal Fantasy 16State of Play contained a few spoilers for the game’s main quest and what happens to some of the characters, all thanks toSquare Enixmaking the strange decision to showcase the game’s equivalent to a glossary. We’ve seen plenty of Final Fantasy 16 over the past few months, but yesterdaySquare Enix decided to give us our most in-depth look so far with a dedicated State of Play presentation. During the showcase, we learned plenty about the game’s combat mechanics, exploration, and the type of content on offer, but we might have also learned some things that Square didn’t want us to.There are some minor spoilers for Final Fantasy 16’s plot and characters ahead, although they mostly seem to be relegated to the prologue and early hours of the game.Related:Final Fantasy 14 Community Spotlight: Esprit’s Totally Normal April ShowAs pointed out by Twitter user aitakaimochi, towards the end of the showcase, Square Enix chose to focus on some of the things that Clive can do around the hideout. This includes interacting with Harpocrates, a scholar who keeps track of Clive’s adventures and tells him things about the world via “The Thousand Tomes”, which is essentially Final Fantasy 16’s version of a glossary.

The showcase then showed Vivian, a strategist who can tell Clive about the state of the world, again acting like a glossary and story summary. During this section, a massive map of the game’s characters pops up, revealing the names of several characters, including Clive and Joshua’s mother, Annabella.

That itself isn’t too spoilery, but then Square Enix decided to, for some reason, show even more of these little lore drops in quick succession, including summaries of some of the game’s early events. One of these, called “Taken Captive by the Empire” seems to suggest that Clive’s mother is the one who betrayed Rosaira, and that she’s responsible for his brother and father’s fate. It also reveals that Clive’s mother is the reason he was “forcibly recruited into the imperial army” and taken away to Sanbreque.

Another spoiler that can be spotted in the “Night of Flames” text is the reveal that there are two Eikons of fire and that they both battle during at Phoenix Gate. The implication here is that both Clive and Joshua are Eikons at this point, as another lore drop notes that Clive passed out during the battle, likely after transforming.

The spoilers that Square Enix willingly showed off aren’t too deep thankfully and only detail the first few hours of the game, but it’s worth keeping an eye out as there’s bound to be more than gets shown off and spoiled from the showcase. If you’re trying to stay away from spoilers, it might be worth muting some key words.
