Clunky Herois a metroidvania RPG that offers a wide range of skills that are used to progress through each level. Generally, they add a variety of ways to tackle new puzzles and enhance combat. These skills are all obtained from bosses found in each area except for World’s Bowels and The Evil One’s Castle.

However, although these skills are supposed to be used in various ways while exploring and fighting, there are a few that are not up to par with the others. For that reason, some of the skills go far above the rest, while others are rarely used or completely useless once other skills are introduced.

8Climb

The worst skill in Clunky Hero is the ability to climb walls located randomly throughout the later levels of the game. This skill is picked up after reaching level five of the Foggy Swamp area and defeating Tetraclop, a giantoctopus-like monster.

The primary uses for this skill are located in the Wasteland area, which you may find by going to the right of the main village. Once you are there, you’ll use the climbing ability once or twice to get to new areas before you are ultimately rewarded with the more valuable skill, Rocket Jump, which eventually makes Climb obsolete for the rest of the game.

7Blast Attack

In an attempt to add more variety of attacks into the game, Blast Attack was added to be a powerful heavy attack that costs mana when used. This skill is picked up after completing a quest to find Vaxena’s mother’s pendant, which is located in the Stinky Dungeon area.

The primary use for this skill is to deal heavy damage when fighting a boss or simply getting rid of stronger enemies in one blow. However, since it costs mana and most enemies can be killed in one to three hits with a normal attack, Blast Attack will remain unused for most of the game as there are just better options available.

6Dive

Dive is a skill that has the potential to be used more often, but it needs to be implemented correctly for any practical use outside of unlocking secret locations or clearing ways for a new area. This skill is unlocked after defeating the Abomination boss located in the Dark Forest area, which can only be opened after going through the Tower in the village.

There are a couple of uses for the dive skill, the main one being that it can unlock shortcuts to areas and reveal secrets hidden behind a rock floor. The other use, which is more uncommon, is that you can attack enemies for a small amount of damage. Unfortunately, you’re more likely to take damage back, making this second use unviable.

5Mighty Burp

The Mighty Burp skill is used to unlock every single end-game area in the game and be a way for your character to deal with strong attacks. This skill can be found in the Freezing Peak area, after defeating the yeti-like boss on the fifth level. When you collect this skill, there are no others left to be obtained.

The primary function of Mighty Burp is to unlock end-game content. It’s indispensable if you’re going to explore World’s Bowels and The Evil One’s Castle. On top of that, there are plenty of secrets in previous areas that can only be unlocked with the Mighty Burp, making it even more viable. As for its attack, however, just like the Blast Attack skill, it costs too much mana, and your regular attacks are better for combat.

4Rocket Jump

Despite being one of the last skills to acquire, Rocket Jump is an instrumental skill for nearly all situations regarding exploring and finding secrets. After journeying to the Wasteland area and getting to the fourth level, you’ll be faced against the steam robot boss, who will drop the Rocket Jump skill.

Although this skill’s primary function is to allow travel to the Freezing Peak area, it also indirectly replaces the Climb skill. On top of that, Rocket Jump allows for travel in dungeons to be faster without putting yourself in danger, as you can beat platforming sections easily with just one button press. The only downside is that you must be on a flat surface to use this skill.

3Dash

One of the three primary skills used frequently throughout the game is the simple yet valuable Dash skill. This skill is acquired after defeating Teru Teru, a ghost boss located in the bottom layer of the Stinky Dungeon.

The best ways to utilize the Dash skill are in combat situations and exploring dungeons. It’s a great skill to have when fighting a boss and avoiding their attacks or simply trying to skip past enemies you’ve fought more than once. There are also plenty of platforming sections and secrets that require Dash to be used to succeed.

2Arm Shot

The only helpful attack skill in the game is a secondary attack called Arm Shot. It’s a skill that fires a green projectile toward enemies and does twelve damage. you’re able to acquire this skill after completing the quest “Kill The Abomination,”given by the NPC, Zurly, in the village tower.

There are several valuable aspects of Arm Shot that every other attack skill doesn’t have. The main ones are that Arm Shot can take out floating mines, bonuses can modify the skill, and it costs relatively no mana. On top of that, it does a fair bit of damage compared to the other attack skills that cost a lot for very little.

1Double Jump

Ironically, the best skill in Clunky Hero is none other than a fundamental addition to the game, jumping twice. Clunky Hero would not function as a game if it weren’t for this skill, which is why it makes sense that it’s located after defeating the first boss, Rabid Beaver, in the Pretty Forest.

Without Double Jump, the game feels slow and, well, clunky. When first launching the game, the first area is a struggle to push through as many areas are tedious to platform with only one jump. However, once Double Jump is unlocked, the game feels like a breath offresh air and becomes an entirely new experience. There isn’t a point in time where this skill isn’t practical, making this the best skill overall.
