Sorcerers are powerful charismatic casters in the world ofDungeons & Dragons. With their natural affinity for magic, Sorcerers are one of the preeminent spell casting classes of the classic tabletop role-playing game, with access to powerful and terrible magic power.

Of all the spells that any caster has in their arsenal, level nine spells are the most powerful. Though there are few spells that are ranked in this level of arcane power, your access to these spells is extremely limited becoming available only to the highest levels of Sorcerers. With so few casts of these spells available it is always best to know which ones are worth the most to each situation, as all spells are not made equal.

5Mass Polymorph

There are few things more terrifying when it comes to magic than being able to transform creatures into other things. Better then, to be able to transform a whole swathe of creatures into other more powerful ones. Using this spell on up to ten creatures, willing or not, you can transform them into any beast of your choice. The creatures take on this new form for up to an hour, gaining all the stats and abilities of whichever creature you chose.

Not only is this spell good for boosting your allies' abilities, granting them a pool of hit points and combat stats that revert to their normal ones when the spell ends or the new form’s hit points are depleted, but it can be used to neutralise enemies. By turning them into ineffectual beasts like squirrels or rats, Mass Polymorph can strip them of their natural powers. Being able to remove all the abilities of any creature that cannot resist the magic is an extremely powerful effect. Especially over such a large group, for an hour

4Blade Of Disaster

Unimaginable destructive arcane power. The Blade of Disaster creates a three-foot-long rift in a nearby space. With the created rift in space, you can swing it as a spell attack. You can attack your enemies with an arcane rift. Each turn, you can make up to two attacks with this rift blade as a bonus action for the spell’s duration. For a full minute, you can swing at your enemies dealing a whopping 4d12 damage per hit. That’s the same as hitting someone four times with a Greataxe.

Not only does this incredible amount of damage deal the rarely resisted force type damage, but also it has enhanced critical hit properties. If you roll an 18, 19, or 20 on your attack roll, the hit is critical, and instead of doubling the dice to 8d12, it is tripled to 12d12. All of this damage, using only a bonus action to cast.

3Psychic Scream

To be able to create a burst of psychic energy that reaches into an enemy’s mind to injure and disorient them is a fantastic power fantasy. Over a huge radius, you can choose up to ten creatures all of whom have to try and defend with an Intelligence Saving Throw, an attribute rarely high on any creature outside of wizards, or be subjected to a huge quantity of damage.

Not only would the enemy become damaged, but they also become stunned. When you consider the huge amount of enemies targeted by this spell, the fact that they all take damage and become incapable of reacting makes this spell a ridiculous thing to have in one’s arsenal.

2Time Stop

One of the most iconic utility spells available to any caster in Dungeons & Dragons, Time Stop does exactly what you would expect it to - it stops time. A powerful ability with few caveats makes Time Stop one of the most worthwhile spells to cast in a pinch.

Every creature within an astonishing one thousand feet of you cannot act or have time pass for them for the duration of the spell as you take up to five additional turns. This allows you to cast spells that bolster yourself for the fight; move to safety; apply healing to yourself; and set up spells that will go into effect when time returns to normal. All of these things are available as options so long as they don’t take you beyond the effect range of the spell, or affect another creature hit by the spell.

So long as you don’t directly attack another creature, or bolster allies, you can set up. This can save your party’s lives in a pinch. The greatest part of the spell is that it cannot be resisted. There’s no save to avoid the effects, just back to back turns for the caster.

1Wish

The iconic level nine spell is considered by the community to be one of the greatest gifts that a caster has access to. The ability to replicate any spell of level eighth or lower. The ability to conjure or create any item that is non-magical and is worth up to a whopping twenty-five thousand gold. The ability to ask for anything, and leave it up to the narrative whims of the Game Master to make it work. A wish is a powerful thing indeed.

With its base examples allowing for you to emulate powerful spells Sorcerers do not have access to, such as Resurrection or Conjure Celestial, this already allows for Sorcerers to overcome impossible odds. Additionally, being able to heal all of your allies (or up to twenty creatures total), or grant resistance to a damage type of your choice to up to ten creatures. These supplementary abilities of the Wish spell allow you to overcome some of the most dangerous things that the world of tabletop role-playing has to offer.

Whether you seek permanent magical effects, or wish to do the impossible, the downsides of the spell are entirely narrative. The stress of overreaching with the spell deals damage to you if you attempt to cast another, your Strength failing you until you grant your body the rest it needs - these are all powerful and important narrative moments in the climax of your adventures as well as interesting mechanical reactions to you altering reality. Truly the most powerful tool available to any Sorcerer.
