Osvald’s story is one of the more emotional ones inOctopath Traveler 2- it’s not all happiness and dancing, like Agnea’s. The first two chapters deal with his escape from Frigit Isle, a prison island with an incredible level of security. From then on, he is on a journey of revenge against the man who framed him for the death of his family.

Chapter 3 takes Osvald to Conning Creek, where he used to live. But will there be any answers to the questions that have burned within Osvald for so long? Our gut says ‘maybe.’

Town Phase: Conning Creek Part 1

Upon entering Conning Creek, Osvald resolves to investigate his home, which burned down five years previous.Head all the way to the east to reach Osvald’s house, which is now a ruin and hasn’t been touched in five years. Approach the house to witness a cutscene. Afterwards, you’re directed toOsvald’s laboratory, which is actually located in the cave behind the house.

Pick up theFire Soulstone (M)on the way if you haven’t already scoured the area for chests previously.

When you reach the bottom of the study, a cutscene will begin in which you’ll meetLady Clarissa, Osvald’s old assistant. After a quick dialogue, the two will come to blows.

Octopath Traveler 2 - Osvald and Lady Clarissa in Osvald’s lab

Spears, Daggers, Lightning

Nothing

This isn’t a very tough battle. Lady Clarissa can use attacks likeMass Flashthat target the entire party, though, so it might be handy tohave a Cleric on standbyto heal them up from time to time.Dazzling Flashwill inflict Confusion on one of your allies, but this shouldn’t be too troubling. If you have a Herb of Clarity, use it on them to clear the status.

Your strategy should be obvious -just reduce Clarissa’s Break Points until she’s Broken, and then send somefully-boosted attacksher way. With any luck, you’ll be able to defeat her in a single Break.

Town Phase: Conning Creek Part 2

After beating Clarissa, Osvald will decide that he needs to investigate the guards who adamantly insisted that Harvey was not present at the fire on that fateful day. Return to the main area of Conning Creek and start investigating the NPCs here with green speech bubbles over their heads. There arethree of them:

You do not need to Scrutinize or otherwise extract detailed information from these people, you simply have to talk to them. After all three have been spoken to, Osvald will decide to investigate the guards directly. TheGuard Outpostis on the highest level of the town.

Dungeon Phase: Guard Outpost

Oddly for a building full of law-abiding guards (presumably), you will still getrandom encountersas you make your way through the Guard Outpost. Ah, RPGs.

Collect theFire Soulstonefrom the chest just to the right of the entrance, and then start making your way through the Outpost. When you reach a storeroom filled with weapons, open the chest here for someGuard’s Armor. It’s a decent piece of body armor, so equip it to someone squishy if you don’t have better gear.

Octopath Traveler 2 - The entrance to the Guard’s Outpost in Conning Creek

When you reach the large path that leads forward, ignore it and continue on to the right to find a room that contains anEmpowering Lychee (M). Head back to the main path and head north underneath the staircase to find a red chest that contains aGuard’s Hat, which matches nicely with the armor you just picked up. Head up the stairs and when you reach the save point, continue on to the right - there’s asecret passagethat you may take to reach the red chest in the middle of the raised path. It contains7,200 leaves.

When you’re ready, save the game and continue into the next room to face the boss of the chapter.

Octopath Traveler 2 - The Boss Fight against Captain Stenvar and his Footmen

Axes, Bows, Fire, Wind

While Stenvar’s Footmen are present in the battle,Stenvar’s weaknesses will be blocked off, making it impossible to break Stenvar without using skills that specifically ignore weaknesses. The Footmen themselves are very weak, so it shouldn’t be troubling to take them out early on - with aweakness to Fireand Osvald being required for the fight, you have all the skills you need to deal with them handily. Just use aboosted Fireballwhile they are both Broken.

Each Footman covers specific weaknesses of Stenvar’s. The top Footman blocks his weaknesses toSpears and Lightning, while the bottom one blocks the weaknesses toSwords, Bows, and Darkness.

Octopath Traveler 2 - Getting attacked by Stenvar’s Footmen

The Footmen are weak but can bebuffed by Stenvar- if this happens, focus on offense to prevent getting whittled down by their attacks.

Without the Footmen, Stenvar isn’t too troublesome. His attacks, even hisparty-wide attacks, don’t deal a huge amount of damage. After spending a few turns without Footmen, though,he will summon another pairthat you’ll have to eradicate before targeting Stenvar’s weaknesses.

If he tries to summon a third pair of Footmen, the ability will fail. Stenvar will then actually beg for his life, throwingmoneyat you! He won’t do this forever, though, so just finish him off once he’s thrown money at you if you make it that far into the fight.

A very easy way to deal a ton of damage - especially while Stenvar is Broken - is tocombine Osvald’s Advanced Magic buff with his Latent Abilityand use his Lightning spell. This can deal a huge amount of damage. Take this a step further by buffing Osvald withAgnea’s Peacock Strut, or any other method of increasing hiselemental attack.

After winning the fight, Osvald will interrogate Stenvar and gain a clue as to Harvey’s location: it looks like Montwise is the next destination.
