Coffee Talkis more than just a barista game where youlisten to stories and make comforting drinks. For example, there are loads of different ways for characters' stories to unfold and ways for you to experience the game.

Do you need to play the first Coffee Talk game in order to play the second one? How do you progress toward certain endings? Here is everything you need to know before starting your adventure in Coffee Talk Episode 2.

8There Is An Inventory Now

This is a mechanic that the first game lacked. Characters can now give you items to keep in a drawer or inventory. These items can pile up and are supposed to be given to the intended recipient at the correct time. After making your drink, you can select Give Item and pick something from your inventory to place with your order. If you forgot to give a character an item in the correct time frame, the item disappears for the rest of your playthrough.

The game does not tell you how long you need to wait to give someone a gift or item, you just have to know when the time is right. As a general tip, just give it to the person the very next time you see them. Giving characters special items can advance storylines with said characters.

7There Are References To The First Game

Almost all of the cast from the first game reappears for Coffee Talk Episode 2. The Barista greets these characters as lifelong friends just catching up, and they will remain for the entirety of the game’s campaign. Some references can be made to the past. There are actually only three new main characters in Episode 2. You may be wondering if this means you should play the first game before this one!

Fortunately, you don’t have to. Everything that happens within this new entry can be understood without having pre-knowledge of the returning characters from the previous game. On the other hand, if you have played the first game, you will be very pleased to see your old friends once again and find out where their life is headed to next.

6Choices Matter, But Not From Dialogue

As the tags on the Steam Store page say, Coffee Talk Episode 2 is a Choices Matter Interactive Fiction. How you play the game will determine different outcomes, as there are multiple endings. As you play the game, you may be wondering how to even change the tide of events when you cannot choose what to say or really sway any conversations that are had. All conversations just automatically happen naturally as you play the game. So how do you affect the story?

The answer lies in the coffee cup. Your ability to correctly give orders, or to fail orders, will affect how your customers feel. The characters come to your coffee shop for comfort and to de-stress. If you can’t get their order right, they will not be happy, or they may not get that boost they were looking for which can then sway the conversation. Whether you give characters the correct items in your inventory can also change tides.

5How To Make A Drink Correctly

Sometimes making a drink will come really easy to you. In these cases, a character will simply tell you what three ingredients they want. However, there are times when this is not the case, and you have to rack your brain to figure out what the character is asking for. The first thing you want to be aware of is that the first ingredient is your Base, the second ingredient is your Primary flavor, and your third ingredient is your Secondary flavor.

If you know the character wants strong coffee with a hint of sweetness, you would put Coffee, Coffee, honey. If the character instead wanted a very sweet coffee, where you barely taste any caffeine, you would put Coffee, Honey, Honey. You also want to be aware of the flavor notes characters use to describe what they want. Instead of saying a drink name or ingredient, they may say they want something cool or bold. Cool would refer to something like Mint. Bold would be Ginger. Sweet would be Honey. Tart would be Lemon, and so on.

Head to the Main Menu and select Endless Mode and then Free Brew to practice making drinks and finding the correct recipe, which will then be saved into your Brewpad for when you continue your campaign game.

A lot of the recipes for drinks in your Brewpad are replicas of drinks from the previous game. You may not remember or have knowledge of the drinks from the first game, but luckily they have already been shared in guides for you.

4You Can Look Back At Dialogue

It can be easy to forget what someone said or just click through dialogue to get the game going. When characters are trying to describe what type of drink they want, they will go on and on until your menu pops up to make the drink. At that point, you may forget what they even said they were looking for. Luckily, you can always look back at dialogue no matter what you are doing in the game.

There is no pause button, but people don’t continue talking until you press any key for them to continue. While in dialogue or while making a drink, simply press the bubble with a couple of dots in it, next to the Options menu button on the bottom right. This will open up a transcript of everything that was spoken that day, including the Barista’s own internal musings.

3Restart The Day

If you forgot to give a character the correct item, or you simply kept getting their order wrong, you can always redo that day until you get it right. Select the Options menu in the bottom right and then select Load Game. This will take you to the calendar. The days are set out in a calendar form, and you can replay any day you have fully completed once before. If you have completed the entire game, you can even start a new file and jump ahead in days.

Hovering over a day will show you every single character (main characters and side characters) that shows up that day, on the sidebar description. If there is an empty silhouette for some slots, this means that you have yet to unlock some characters for someone’s story. This will help you keep track of who shows up when and if you have yet to unlock some things.

2The Extras Menu Has Goodies

In the previous game, you were able to access a Gallery, Achievements, and Comics menu from the selection Extras in Main Menu. These give you additional story beats, background information, or game progress as you play. Coffee Talk Episode 2 lets you look at a Gallery that continuously updates as you unlock different stories. These include pictures of characters in their private life, pictures from their Tomodachill, and more.

You are also able to keep track of all of your achievement progress through the Extras menu. Steam does let you know when you get achievements, but it can be hard to know what you may be missing… The Achievement menu has a grid list of every single achievement in the game. You can hover over them and see what their description is to get an idea of how to complete them.

1Character’s Tomodachill Profiles' Update

There is a little social media tab in your phone menu, just like with the first game, called Tomodachill. This lets you keep up with what characters are doing outside of your coffee shop. When you first meet a character, their profile will unlock on Tomodachill. Each character will have tiers to their Tomodachill profile. The more you get their orders correct, the more they trust you. This trust, in turn, unlocks your ability to see personal things on their social media profiles.

The red smiley face is a surface-level trust where you can learn their birthday and occupation. The yellow smiley face may share their favorite activity and then the last smiley face shares personal life details. Even though you are supposed to have already met some of the main cast from the previous game, you still have to earn their trust to unlock the tiers to their profile.
