Launched in February 2023,Octopath Traveler 2was long awaited, a worthy successor toOctopath Traveler. Like Octopath Traveler, the sequel offers you the choice to play with asecondary class, all of varying usefulnessand highly dependent on your preferred characters and play style.
In fact, quite a bit of the game changes depending on how you prefer to play and who your favorite characters are. But one thing does remain true, no matter who your favorites are: some characters are better suited to a secondary job than others and not everybody can reach their prime with the secret secondary jobs, despite how cool they are.

Whether you’re taking on self-imposed challenges or you’re playing Octopath Traveler 2 for the first time, you want to be at your very best. Octopath Traveler 2 may not have won any awards in 2023, but it absolutely deserved so many. This game is truly enjoyable, whether your characters are functioning at the peak of their ability or they aren’t. Experiment with the secondary jobs, find what works for your play style, and just have fun with it. Even if Octopath Traveler 2 isn’t an open world game, there are plenty of possibilities and combinations to try out, though we do, obviously, have some secondary job recommendations.
Thief
Thieves Guild: Clockbank, industrial district at night
If you want to make Agnea a great supporting character,the Apothecaryis a sure-fire way to success. It allows her toheal and use herbs to buff charactersand support them. Her latent ability doesn’t offer as much support for this position as Cassti’s does, but it can give Agnea a chance to extend her support skills and debuff enemies easier.
The Thiefskill, on the other hand, gives Agnea more of an opportunity to be at the front of the battle,giving buffsto those who come after her anddebuffing enemiesbefore they can lay a hand on the rest of the group. Even better is that the Thief skill,HP Thief, lets Agnea do damage and heal herself simultaneously.
Clerics Guild: Borderfall, between Flamechurch and Montwise
Inventor
In a house East of New Delsta by the Riverbank
The Clericside job is a natural choice for Castti,extending her healing abilitiesand giving her the bonus of being able to deal light-based damage. The Cleric side job makes Cassti theperfect healerfor any traveling group.The Inventor side jobmight seem like a bit of an odd choice, but truth be told, the Inventor side job is theperfect balance of support and damage.
The hardest part of the Inventor’s side job isfinding all the materials to gain access to each new skill, but it is undeniably worth it in the end. The Changeable Catapult ensures that Castti will always be able to deal any form of melee damage. The Elemental Bomb Bottle ensures that you may always hit an enemy’s exposed elemental weak point.

Armsmaster

Hikari, understandably, benefits the most when he has access to the most melee weapons. It’s pointless to try and build up his elemental attacks when he thrives while wielding martial and ranged weaponry.The Hunter sidejob works with this skill and increases Hikari’s access todifferent weaponryuntil you can get the Armsmaster job.
The Armsmaster side jobshould be your end goal for Hikari. This side job provides Hikari access to skills and weapons that ensure he can take on thehardest bosses in the gamewithout breaking too much of a sweat. Once you have your hands onevery Armsmaster weaponin the game, Hikari — and, by proxy, the rest of your team — will be nearly unstoppable.
Warrior
Warrior’s Guild: Sai, in Hinoeuma just west of Conning Creek
Ochette is in a similar boat to Hikari and Throne — you want her speed high, and having access to more weapons is always a plus. Ochette is amelee damage-centric character, though she often relies heavily on her Provoke and Capture skills. You should still aim to give her more weapons through theWarrior side job, especially if you aren’t using Hikari, specifically because she does excel with weaponry.
If you find that you’re using her Beastling skills more often than not, however, you can aim to boost her speed with theThief side job, putting her at the top of the ranks and ensuring that you can throw out your support beast and give a boost to all your teammates before the battle is too far along.
Arcanist

The Clericis the best choice for Osvald because itexpands his range of magic. A surprisingly high number of creatures in Octopath Traveler 2 are weak to light magic, so Osvald will almost always have an in for their weak points. Even better is that Osvald is a surprisingly adept healer. When paired with his Advanced Magic skill, Osvald gains access to theHeal Moreability, which can heal your party to near full.
The Arcanistis a natural development for late-game choice, as it gives Osvald access tolight and dark magic,which he could never gain access to on his own. The JP cost for these skills is high, at 2000 JP a piece, but at this point, you likely have enough to buy them all from the start. The Arcanist’s skills buff Osvald and the rest of the team while dealing significant damage, making itone of the best secondary jobsin the game.
Dancer’s Guild: in the Eastern section of Wellgrove
Apothecary
Apothecary’s Guild: Conning Creek, in the Southern Harborlands
Partitio thrives when he can be in a supporting role and where he doesn’t have to use BP. In this right, the Dancer and Apothecary classes are some of the best he can take.The Dancerclass allows Partitioto act quickly and donate BPor buff allies at the start of the round. If you don’t want to donate BP, you may start your rounds early with the shield breaking by getting a Ruinous Kick-off in the beginning.
The Apothecarylets Partitio take a background role, soothing the ills of others,healing your teammates, andreviving themas need be while still being able todonate his BPto your strongest player. This class keeps Partitio sturdy, so he can’t be taken out of the game in one fell swoop.
Scholar’s Guild: Western Winterbloom Snows, north of the bridge
Conjurer

The Scholarside job seems almost like a natural choice for Temenos. It gives him access to more magical abilities and ensures that, even if you don’t want the grouchy and generally unsociable Osvald in your party, you still have access tothe analyze skill. Even if youdohave Osvald in your party, analyzing a creature and getting allits weaknesses in one roundensures that you will be on the path to success.
The Conjurerclass is one you’ll want to master quickly, andyou’ll need a lot of JP.Each skill costs 2,000 JP, but it is worth it. All the Conjurer’s skills offer support and bonus damage to every member of your party. After each attack, you can deal someextra elemental damage, or with other skills, you can ensure that Temenos stays alive, even when the blow should have been fatal.
The key to giving Throne the best chance possible is to give her a secondary class that boosts her speed and evasion. In this light, the Dancer and Hunter classes are perfect for the thief.The Danceroffers Throne the ability to be a moresupport-oriented character, and with the Ruinous Kick skill, she can always knock down a shield.
The Hunter, however, gives Throne a wider range of weapons and the ability tounleash multiple attacksin one turn with the Precise Shot skill. No matter what you pick, though, Throne will almost always be at the top of the attack order.
