Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Songdoesn’t play like the typical types of storylines that you have come to expect from the JRPG genre. Instead, the game allows you to find your path to defeating Saruin, the being who thinks himself a god. Finding your path doesn’t stop at the world map and story, it also extends to the gameplay and classes you’ll have access to on your journey.

Technically, there is no ‘wrong’ class you can put on any of your party members. Rather, you are encouraged to find your play style and tweak it to your specifications through 38 different classes to choose from. The staggering number can feel intimidating for those who are new to the series, but some stand-out classes might fit the type of gameplay experience you are looking for.
9Geckling Knight
Starting with the Geckling Knight, a physical attacker that uses two-handed axes, lances, and their fists to deal impressive amounts of damage per turn which makes the class versatile in choosing which weapon feels the best to you. This class also comes with a nice self-shield, which helps you from receiving too much damage from enemies.
The biggest draw for Geckling Knightthough is its incredibly high counter rate, widely considered to be the highest among all other classes. This trait makes this class more than worth staying in for the entire game. This game is all about defense, and what better defense than returning no-cost damage to the enemy?

8Kjar Sentinel
A class that is proficient in bothmagics like demonology and water-based hydrology, while also being able to use weapons as well, making it suitable for all types of situations. Not to mention, while learning your hydrology skills, you are going to gain some ‘secondary’ healing skills, so you won’t have to worry about having to rely on items. Depending on your play style, at least.
The Kjar Sentinel prefers piercing-type weapons, such as bows and spears while having an innate piercing damage boost to give each hit more of a punch. You know when crit stats come into play, you’re going to be dealing a lot of high damage. That’s going to come in handy, as battle difficulty increases with every fight.

7Imperial Scholar
The customization of the battle continues with the Imperial Scholar and the ability to mix and fuse different magic spells to make larger, stronger spells rain down on the enemies. While this and the often-regarded-as-stronger class Rosalian Mage use magic in similar ways, there is one sizable distinction between the two.

Imperial Scholar can only fuse two spells against the Rosalian Mage’s three, but Imperial Scholar has better spell schools to use.
6Bard
Bards in other gamestend to be able to use one weapon, such as a bow or some sort of music-themed weapon, and have a handful of magic at their disposal. Nothing too crazy, but enough to survive any enemies that decide to try to make your day bad. In Romancing SaGa, however, the Bard might be the most versatile class so far.
As a bard, you may equip weapons like a fencing foil, a sword, and a bow. Magically, your bard has access to cosmology, magic that deals with the stars and protection spells, and demonology, a slight misnomer since this class of magic is mostly for debuffs and non-elemental energy attacks. The perks of the bard don’t stop there either, as you’ll gain field abilities that make it easier for you to search for treasure on the map and trade with folks.

5Draconite
TheDraconite is an absolute powerhouse like its dragon-like namesake, and could go blow for blow with the Rosalian Officer and Swordsman class respectively in terms of strength and defense combined. You are also able to activate this class’s defense boost mode, even while in your attack stance, becoming a wall of defense that is almost invincible. Yet, though this class is on another level of strength, there’s just one huge factor holding it back from being higher on the list.
See, in Romancing SaGa, you’re able to unlock advanced classes by paying to become proficient in specific skills. Thing is, the only place you can change a character into a Draconite is one of the endgame areas that are hard to access early on. You’ll need a lot of patience and money to get this to a playable level.

4Castle Knight
That being said, if you are more worried about being defensive instead of going on the offensive, then the Castle Knight might be more the speed you are looking for. This class is best played in defensive mode and receives a defense buff from all available weapon types they can wield.

Plus, the Castle Knight comes with the power to deflect attacks for fromother party members, unlike both the Draconite and Kjar Sentinel, who can block damage for themselves. As long as you keep the Castle Knights' compassion (similar to morale) levels up by healing the damage they take, they’ll do what they can to keep your party alive.
3Warrior
The Warrior comes with the ability to wield all types of heavy weapons, such as the greatsword, two-handed sword, and two-handed axes to start. Being a legendary class, it comes with the benefit of having lower SP costs, and who wouldn’t want that?
The real bonus of running this class? If you get your starting class as a Valhallan Warrior, then it sets you on the path to learning some really good in-class skills for the legendary Warrior to use as well.

2Rosalian Mage
If the Imperial Soldier can fuse two magic spells and cause excellent damage, a Rosalian Mage’s spells can cause twice the damage the former does and cause several different status effects to the opposing party that the Scholar just can’t do. Rosalian Mages can fuse up to three spells, creating some pretty out-there spells, such as adding Mind Blast to Starbeam and Wave of Life making a cheaper, Stronger, Mind Blast filled with the paralysis debuff.
Not only are the spells stronger and cheaper, depending on which you fuse, but most of them come with a status effect baked into them, and this is the only mage class that can do so innately. The other class has to buy and build that type of class to work, and even then they can’t match the success rate of the Rosalian Mage’s status effects.

1Pirate
Speed is the name of the game here when it comes to pirating. Their Go First Ability makes them great for getting ahead of the incoming damage to cast some quick Hydrology healing spells, making the class a surprising, but clutch healer in the very early hours of the game.
Pirates can wield both hand axes and foils, which are good for channeling magic. Honestly, the pirate classbeing one of the fastest classes in the game is a nice surprise, but the most surprising thing is when they can master all the Hydrology skills and end up learning to fold space and time, just so they can end a turn on their terms. Now, that’s power.
