I don’t really want to kiss any Sonic characters. But the internet does, and I am beholden to their demands for eternity. Whether they’re obsessing over the Blue Blur’s feet, a desire for him to swing both ways, or his cross-species human relations, the fandom makes its thirst obvious.

Recently I had a chance to sit down with Ben Schwartz to chat about his upcoming role in Renfield, and alongside delving deep into the ultra-violent horror comedy, we inevitably talked about another character he helped bring to life. I presented Schwartz with the classic game of Smooch, Marry, Kill. Except this time, we were focusing solely on vampires.

As for the options, he was choosing between Jared Leto’s Morbius, Robert Pattinson’s Edward Cullen, and Sonic’s Rouge the Bat. In the established canon she might not be a vampire, but she is a bat, which isbasicallythe same thing right? Let me off with this one.

“Oh my goodness Rouge the Bat from Sonic?!” is Schwartz’ immediate reaction, but after composing himself we’re able to get down to business and really hash the options out. “I’m gonna kill Jared Leto’s Morbius. He had a good run. I loved him in the comics though. Then we’re gonna smooch the bat and marry Edward I think. That’s Robert Pattinson?”

Quick, decisive, and the exact options I would have picked if presented by the same trio. I just don’t think Morbius makes the cut, and aside from all the creepy brooding and breaking of furniture on your wedding night I bet Edward Cullen is otherwise an excellent big spoon.

He does bring up a good point after picking his options though: “Wait, does this mean that Robert Pattinson has two roles that really revolve around bats?” Yes, I guess it does.

Schwartz takes on the role of Tedward Lobo in Renfield, a nepo baby gangster who believes he is the hottest shit on the planet despite his entire worth being propped up by rich parents and a corrupt police department far too scared to cross him. So when the potential to work with Nicolas Cage’s Dracula rears its head, of course he sucks up to the big man in pursuit of ultimate power. It’s a far cry from a role like Sonic The Hedgehog, but equally as fun.

Be sure to check out ourfull Renfield reviewandextended chat with Schwartz herewhere we touch on working with Nicolas Cage, becoming Tedward Lobo, and exactly how Tears of the Kingdom is going to take over his life. We don’t talk about kissing more of our favourite Sonic characters though, which I profusely apologise for.
