Now that remakes are proving to be an easy and reliable way to make mountains of cash from already established titles, every publisher out there is diving into their vaults to see if they have a fan favorite classic they can spruce up. Obviously, some titles have a lot more promise as a 3D remake than others, but the increasing popularity of the ‘HD-2D remake’ has opened up a few new doors. If you’re wondering what ‘HD-2D’ means, it’s a unique art style that is primarily associated with Square Enix, used in titles likeLive A Live,Triangle Strategy, andOctopath Traveler 2. It allows developers to use a simplified pixel art style, but still make a title feel modern and fresh. Almost every old-school RPG you can think of has had fans clamouring for a HD-2D remake, but aPokemonfan has gone one step further and made their own concept video of Pokemon Red (thanksKotaku).Related:Imagine How Incredible A New Pokemon Stadium Could BeFirst shared by Twitter user Pory, a fan called Dott who makes HD-2D remakes of various classic titles uploaded a video of their Pokemon Red remake to YouTube earlier this year, though its only been noticed by the wider Pokemon fanbase as of this week. You’d think that with how poorly received the remakes of Pokemon Diamond & Pearl were last year that the community would be begging for Game Freak to take note, but the idea of a HD-2D remake of a Pokemon game seems to be surprisingly divisive among fans.
You only have to take a look at the Quote Tweets and replies to Proy’s tweet to see just how mixed the reaction is to Dott’s creation as well as the potential of a HD-2D Pokemon remake. High-profile YouTubers likeMightyKeefandAlpharadimmediately saw promise in Dott’s creation and wished Game Freak would make their own, the latter saying they’d “sell multiple years” of their life to make a Pokemon Black & White HD-2D remake happen. There are plenty of others fans of the series in the replies sharing the same sentiment.
On the other hand, there are those that don’t want to see the series turn into something like Octopath Traveler and think that a HD-2D remake would get rid of some of the series' unique charm. There are loads of people saying that the concept “seems off”, while others simply don’t like the Octopath-esque art style and would prefer to see something less blurry. Whatever the case, Dott’s creation is certainly impressive for a one-man project, though it seems to be caught in the middle of an intense Pokemon battle.
