One of the bigger decisions to make about your character is what race they’ll be. To the woe of anyone indecisive, there are plenty of options here too. One of the later added character races, and once a somewhat common bad guy, is the grung. These amphibious humanoids are cute and deadly in equal amounts, but what should you know about them when considering playing one?
8Get In Close
One of the biggest differences with the grung compared to other races is their Poisonous Skin trait, which does, well, exactly what it says.
Thanks to the poisonous oils your body secretes, you may poison any creature that touches you forcing them to take a con save. This is great for any class you want to run with a focus on unarmed attacks, as any hit with foot or fist will have an added poisonous potential. Just be careful around your party members.

7Rogues and Scouts
Grung are capable of being any class, but they excel at scout roles and rogues especially. This comes down to a few key features.

First off, the aforementioned poison is an added benefit for hit-and-run rogues. The ability to move quickly and being such a small size makes it harder to hit and pin down when in a fight. Not to mention there is also an increase in perception thanks to your Arboreal Alertness. If you aren’t sure what class to play, consider being the party’s go-to stealth operative.
6Think Vertically
When movement is concerned, grung have the upper hand on a lot of other races. Not because they’re incredibly quick but because of how they move.
Grungs, like many frogs, have very sticky pads on their hands and feet. This makes your climbing speed the same as your usual moving speed. Any standing leap you take is increased as well. When in combat or exploring, verify to understand the space you’re moving in to see if you can use height to your advantage.

5Martial Classes
Grung are fairly good in a fight, which may seem odd due to their small and somewhat squishy forms. They know how to hold their own, though.
If you want to use the grung’s inherent abilities to their maximum potential, then martial classes are the way to go. Their movement makes them great at moving across the battlefield, and their poison resistance and Poison Skin all add up to increased damage potential and less damage is potentially taken in a fight.

4Think About Color
The grung have quite an interesting cultural backstory, one that you may consider when looking into creating a grung character of your own.
Grung work on a caste system based on their color. Each color relates to a certain career path for grung society. Consider which color you want to be. Do they follow their societal code, or do they rebel against it? That choice is yours.

3Water, Water, Everywhere
There is one thing about grung that could cause you trouble that you should consider when creating your character. Maybe even going as far as talking to your DM as to what they think about it.

That being their Water Dependency trait. Your character must besubmerged in waterfor at least an hour a day. If not, you will begin to fall under the exhausted effect. Maybe your world has plenty of water sources,a healer who won’t mind taking that effect away, or a magic item that will give you water anywhere. Either way, think of how that will affect your play style.
2One With Nature
Grung are a very nature-oriented class. When considering how you want to make your character, keep that in mind.
You may want to goa full druidor ranger route, or rebel against your pull towards nature by making your character love city dwelling. However you want to play it, the options are there, just. Just know how these choices will affect your character and your adventuring as a whole.

1Dex Weapons
When it comes to what weapons your character is going to use, class says a lot, but so do your ability scores.
Grung at their base get a plus two to their dex scores. This makes putting more points in dex incredibly helpful and makes any dex-based weapons hit that much harder. You, of course, are free to go with a strength-based grung, but it could make combat a little harder on your end. Either way, the extra two to dex will make dodging and moving that much easier.
