8Elden Ring
One of From Software’s biggest titles,Elden Ring, takesthe soulslike formulaand puts it in an open world, but although it has more freedom than its predecessors, you can’t just go anywhere you want due to a few areas having prerequisites.
Like its predecessors, Elden Ring features everything you would expect, including plenty of enemies, difficult bosses, co-op for up to four players, important points on the map where you can rest, heal, level up, and fast travel, and a hub area where you can upgrade your equipment and buy necessary materials. If you enjoy Soulsborne games but don’t like how closed off they feel, Elden Ring may be the perfect game.
7Sekiro
A From Software game set in feudal Japan,Sekirois known for being one of the most challenging games in the Soulsborne series, managing to intimidate some players of its predecessors. While dying often is a staple of games like Sekiro, it takes things further by introducing Dragonrot, inflicting the protagonist with anuntreatable contagious diseaseif he dies too frequently.
Your past strategies may not help you much against bosses, but you’re able to still learn their attack patterns over time, as long as you keep the consequences of dying too much in mind. You can also learn a boss’s weaknesses before fighting them if you pay attention to your surroundings and enemy conversations.

The seventh entry in the Xuan Yuan Sword series and the second to see an international release after Xuan Yuan Sword EX: The Gate of Firmament, Xuan Yuan Sword 7 is an action RPG that follows swordsman Taishi Zhao as he goes on a journey to save his incapacitated sister from grave injuries inflicted upon her by a terrifying monster.

A relatively linear game, Xuan Yuan Sword 7 has all the sword-swinging combos and dodging that players have come to expect from modern action games. One unique aspect is that Taishi’s attacks get stronger with repeated use, providing a more interesting way to strengthen the character other than the simple leveling up seen in similar games.
5Sword & Fairy Together Forever
The seventh entry in the Sword & Fairy or Chinese Paladin series; you’d be forgiven if you’ve never heard of the series before, as Sword & Fairy Together forever is only the second game to receive an international release. Sword & Fairy Together Forever stars Yue Qingshu as she goes on a quest alongside a few other characters to discover why creatures known as Vicious Beasts are attacking humans.
As a party-based action RPG, each party member is playable, providing their own unique skills in battle, and can be freely swapped between. There are also plenty of sidequests for those who enjoy side content, although it may be unclear that many reference the game’s predecessors.
4Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends Complete Edition
An entry in Koei Tecmo’s long-runningDynasty Warriorshack and slash series, Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends is an updated version of Dynasty Warriors 8 that adds new playable characters, new EX attacks for previously available characters, new stages, a challenge mode, and a new story mode that focuses on the character Lu Bu.

Xtreme Legends contains all the previously introduced features from Dynasty Warriors 8, including but not limited to improved graphics and frame rate, local co-op, a strategic tower defense-based Ambition Mode, the rock-paper-scissors-like three-point system weapon mechanic, and a Rage Mode mechanic, which allows characters to temporarily become more powerful once their Rage Gauge is filled.
3Romance of the Three Kingdoms 13
An entry in Koei Tecmo’sstrategy game series, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, also known as Sangokushi in Japan, Romance of the Three Kingdoms 13 is the first game in the series to see a Western launch since 2006’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms 11.
Based on the historical novel of the same name, Romance of the Three Kingdoms 13 has you become one of the heroes of the story, strategically making your way through each map. In addition to the traditional campaign mode that follows the story, there’s also a hero mode that shows new players how to play the game.
2Wild Hearts
Koei Tecmo’s third attempt at the hunting action genre after the Toukiden duology,Wild Hearts, adds its unique flair with different weapons and the Karakuri building mechanic. Karakuri are wooden devices you build using Karakuri thread collected from the environment by chopping down trees, breaking rocks, or successfully hitting monsters called Kemono.
Kemono come in two size variations, small and large, with large Kemono being the game’s focus. Like similar games, the main gameplay loop involves hunting Kemono and making stronger weapons and armor from the material you’ve gathered from them. Hunting large Kemono also gives you Kemono Orbs to strengthen your Karakuri and unlock new ones, making future hunts a much easier endeavor.
1Nioh 2
Koei Tecmo’s soulslike series before Wo Long,Nioh 2is a prequel, so previous knowledge is optional. You also create a character instead of sticking to a preset one. Rather than choosing a preset class, you select a weapon and can try all weapons before deciding, although you’ll still pick up other weapons on your journey.
You also have three different combat stances, low, mid, and high, beneficial for various combat situations. Additionally, Nioh 2 has Guardian Spirits obtained from Soul Cores dropped by Yokai enemies and allow you to learn different Yokai Skills, adding another level of gameplay complexity. Nioh 2 may be a different game from Wo Long, but their similarities are easily seen.
