Criminal behavior couldn’t look any cuter with Souls of Chronos and the gang-connected inhabitants of Astella. Without any context, you wouldn’t expect depth, gang wars, and violence from its characters since they’re deceptively adorable.Running around in the townwith Sid and Torii is fun and purposeful because of the people you interact with, even if they’re just minor characters.

Even the major characters have surprising stories up in their sleeves. While many good characters have interesting quirks, the best have engaging and relatable personalities even when they’re living during unstable times—or literally, the end of the world.
10Maya
Maya benevolently took care of both Sid and Torii without any questions asked, even if they were both linked to the Hyenas. They’re not exactly good people by conventional standards, but Maya didn’t care because all she saw were two children she still had hopes for.
She gave both Sid and Torii a place to stay and even covered for them when the governor began cracking down on the remaining Hyenas. She’s been a good guardian figure to both of them throughout the years and was one of the last people to see the pair off.

9Cassia
Cassia took time to warm up to Sid and Torii, but it’s evident that she cares deeply for them. She was saved by the duo before, but she can help them from time to time by selling wares and potions to them whenever. Despite being reluctant about friendships, she’s an efficient medic who even saves Sid from his fever.

She’s well-read and is the type to be philosophical about the world around her. She makes a good friend much later in the game, even though she rarely tells anybody what she feels towards Sid outright.
8Kiji
He was a man whose life and power were waning, but he was still concerned for the poor and stood his ground against oppression. Though he was betrayed, he didn’t use his sword to cut down the one that betrayed him. Instead, he tried to talk sense into the traitor and focused on saving a hostage.
He takes on a rather peaceful approach, and while he has a problem with having too many plans and being unable to execute them, Kiji is clearly a kind old man who only cares for the welfare of those in Seahaze despite the constant threat of the Antelopes.

7Byregot
Byregot is a man of very few words, but he has a kind heart even when he attempts to appear utilitarian about his intentions. He revealed that he met Ilona when he bought her off human traffickers and hired her as his own assistant instead.

He’s not holding the freedom he bought for Ilona against her, and she’s free to leave if she decides to do so—it just so happens that she does enjoy working with him. It’s the end of the world, but he’s proof that there are some that refuse to be bystanders in the face of wrong.
6Robert
He’s soft and treats those in Seahaze as family. If anything, it’s Robert’s soft heart that eventually leads him astray—and you can’t judge him for his decisions, especially not when there are constant threats of violence by the Antelopes who are seizing control over Astella.
It’s clear that he’s desperate for power so that he can provide for those who have Ashen Syndrome and so that most children can have happier lives where he’s from instead of working for their next meal. He was backed into a corner and had to make a tough choice that not everybody could make.

5Torii
You’d have a harder time without Torii in terms of combat, even if the game’s combatisn’t unbearably difficult. Chronuses don’t usually abide by the moral standards of humans, nor do they form emotional attachments with their Linked, but she becomes a dear friend throughout the game.

Torii is shown to care for Sid when he sustained a severe injury that left him knocked out for three days. She’s become somewhat humanized and is implied to feel disappointment over failing to protect herself and Sid at a crucial point in time.
4Sid
He had his life ahead of him and wanted to get out of Astella. His brother was shores away from the island they were raised on, and that inspired him to explore life beyond being a part of Hyena. Despite being in a gang, Sid is shown to be kind and trusting to a fault.
Although he’s not exactly what you’d call “good” since he’s going around town as a pickpocket—but you can use his tough upbringing as an excuse for that. You navigate Astella through him, and the best part of his character is that for a playable character, he’s not exactly an empty shell with a unique personality of his own.

3Vitalle
He’s always been a practical man who just wanted to get by, so it made sense for Vitalle to switch allegiances later on once he weighed who was winning the war. Even before Osiris, Vitalle confessed to being normal and did not want power—he just wanted to survive.

Even when he told Sid he wanted to be remembered and needed power and money, his meeting with Osiris suggested otherwise. For a man who’s far too caught up with gang life, it only made sense for him to put his survival as a priority.
2Secca
What’s not to love about somebody who smashed the glass ceiling to be the Hyena’s boss who’s renowned throughout Astella? She set her goal on revenge and got the power she wanted to acquire, at the cost of everything dear to her.
Despite being the wife of the former head of the Hyenas, she still had to climb the ranks of the hierarchy. Although her ending wasfar from ideal, Sid could at least take solace in the fact that Secca sincerely cared for her, even if she was hell-bent on furthering her revenge.

1Schott
He doesn’t get a lot of screen time, but he’s undeniably a character who defied his odds. Schott is Sid’s older brother, who left gang life and is now wandering somewhere far away. Though exiled for being accused of killing Secca’s husband, this was an opportunity for him to finally explore his desire to see the world outside the Hyenas.
Not everybody can outgrow their comfort zone or leave everything they care about behind indefinitely. Schott is often remembered fondly by his friends, which is why Sid was cared for even after his departure.
